Medical Students in Puerto Cabezas-Nicaragua

Donors and friends sometimes ask if Adelante Mujer brings medical students to the US for their studies. No, we do not. When Sister Ann McKean, CSA conceived the plan to financially assist women in Nicaragua to pursue higher education, she researched three universities on the east coast of Nicaragua. She was very impressed by several features of the recently established URACCAN University (University of the Autonomous Regions of the Nicaraguan Caribbean Coast.)

Sister Ann learned:

  • URACCAN University was founded in 1994 by and for the indigenous peoples of the Caribbean Coast.
  • URACCAN is committed to the service of people in need,
  • URACCAN recognizes the wisdom of the indigenous populations,
  • URACCAN emphasizes the importance of educating women,
  • URACCAN established a medical program in 2008 which combines ancient/traditional medicine with modern health care.

In 2009 Sister Ann negotiated a working relationship between Adelante Mujer and URACCAN University.

The medical program consists of six years of study at URACCAN U. Each semester of classes concentrates on specific aspects of health care the students will encounter as doctors. A considerable amount of work experience in the local hospital is also required. Three years of internship follow graduation from URACCAN.

Because of the prohibitive cost of medical books, students must download topics of study from computers. Sister Ann has been able to find donors who supplied more than a dozen computers to URACCAN U because many students cannot afford to buy one. Each semester Sister Ann, Executive Director, monitors the grades of students to assure that Adelante Mujer is funding the education of well- prepared, good doctors.
