Mark Neilsen wrote a short reflection for Christmas Day in Living with Christ. Mark used the verse from Luke’s Gospel, “All who heard it were amazed by what had been told them by the shepherds.” He then asked, “Can you think of the last time you were amazed?”
Interviewing potential recipients who apply for financial assistance from Adelante Mujer is one of the responsibilities and privileges of the Executive Team member who visits Puerto Cabezas each semester. Hearing the stories and the need of each student is inspiring, to say the least. The following story is not one I could have anticipated.
Several of the Adelante Mujer medical students have been introduced on this blog, a few doctors were named, some donors were quoted. Today you will meet the Board of Directors whose direction and oversight is invaluable to the progress of Adelante Mujer.
Thanksgiving time is not the only time we are grateful. Every day, but especially at this time of year, we are thankful for the people who pray for Adelante Mujer, friends who inquire about the progress of our medical students, seven wonderful women who donate their time and talent as members of the Board of Directors, and all our generous donors who offer their monetary support. We are blessed by each and all of you. There would not be an Adelante Mujer without YOU and your support.

A few months ago this blog informed readers that receiving a large salary is not the motivation for anyone to study medicine in Nicaragua because wages for doctors there are miserably low.
Adelante Mujer students have a grueling schedule in medical school. Added to that, they face demanding responsibilities in the local hospital. Yet, on weekends, students often volunteer in the community and their outreach is frequently to women and teen girls.
When Pope Francis visited the United States last month he related the exchange between young Katharine Drexel and Pope Leo XIII. When Katharine lamented to the Holy Father about the neglect and treatment of Native and African Americans in the US, he asked her a simple question: “And you—What about you?”
Donors and friends sometimes ask if Adelante Mujer brings medical students to the US for their studies. No, we do not. When Sister Ann McKean, CSA conceived the plan to financially assist women in Nicaragua to pursue higher education,she researched three universities on the east coast of Nicaragua. She was very impressed by several features of the recently established URACCAN University (University of the Autonomous Regions of the Nicaraguan Caribbean Coast.)
